33 (D-98) On the lighter side

33 (D-98) A Delta Air Lines jet was flying over Arizona on a clear day. The copilot was giving information about landmarks that the passengers could see when they looked out the window.

"On the right, you can see the Meteor Crater, which is a major tourist attraction in northern Arizona. It was formed when a lump of nickel and iron, roughly 150 feet in diameter and weighing 300,000 tons, struck the earth at about 40,000 miles an hour, scattering white-hot debris for miles in every direction. The hole measures nearly a mile across and is 570 feet deep."

From the cabin, a blonde passenger exclaimed, "Wow! It just missed the highway!"

This is a "dumb blonde joke" (the stereotype of a blonde). My apologies if I have offended anyone, but I wanted to give you a reading comprehension passage with a little less hard work (!) and with a little humor. Humor? Did you understand? Now the question to ask is: What is the meaning of "miss"? It's not the same as "I miss you." (a difficult construction). Can you guess from the context? For now, go looking on the internet or in your dictionaries if you need help. What is the meaning of "lump" and "scatter"?
